Donation from QTS to CEO Cookoff

Quantum Technical Services has donated $1000 to Rachel Argaman, CEO of Toga Hospitality Group, in her bid to raise awareness to the plight of the homeless by entering into the CEO Cookoff. The CEO Cookoff will bring together 30 celebrity chefs and 200 CEO's to raise awareness around two of Australia's major social issues, homelessness and access to regular meals, and will be held at Sydney's Cathedral Square on February 6, 2012.

In 2010, 4.6 million people in Australia reported they were without a permanent place to live at some time in their lives. Of these people, 40% sought assistance from a service provider while they were homeless. In addition, more than one million children go to school without breakfast daily and go to bed without dinner. Two million people rely on food relief in Australia at some point every year.

The CEO Cookoff will allow both chefs and CEO's to raise awareness and resources in support of two organisations who are doing great work towards helping those in need – Mission Australia and OzHarvest.

Donation from QTS towards food crisis in Africa

Quantum Technical Services is proud to announce that on behalf of all our employees we have donated $5,000 to the Australian Government’s Dollar for Dollar initiative to raise funds for the unfortunate people living in the Horn of Africa.

The need for assistance remains acute.

  • More than 13 million people require urgent humanitarian aid.
  • In Somalia 750,000 people are at risk of starvation.
  • Unprecedented numbers of people are fleeing their homes for neighbouring countries.
  • The situation is being made worse by life-threatening cholera and measles outbreaks in the region.

How can I donate?

The Australian Government's Dollar for Dollar initiative will match each dollar donated to appeals run by AusAID-accredited non-government organisations (NGOs) working to alleviate the food crisis in the Horn of Africa from 5 October until 30 November 2011. This means for example, if you donate $50 to one of these NGOs, the Australian Government will match it with $50.

If you should wish to make a personal donation, you can determine where your money is directed. Simply donate to any of the following organisations (listed in alphabetical order) before 30 November 2011 and the Australian Government will match each dollar you give.

Queensland Donation

Quantum Technical Services is pleased to announce a $5,000.00 donation to the Queensland Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal, made on behalf of its entire staff.

The Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal is a Trust Fund established to assist those Queenslanders affected by the recent flooding and Tropical Cyclone Yasi.  All money raised by this fund will be directed to address those with the greatest need.  After much consideration it was decided a donation to this appeal was the best way for Quantum Technical Services to actively support our fellow citizens of Queensland.

X-Ray Destruction and Recycling

X-ray films contain silver in the form of halides, which can be extracted and converted into pure silver. X-ray destruction and recycling is good environmental policy, reducing harm to the environment by keeping them out of landfill. You can dispose of your x-rays responsibly by sending them to Siltech.

Click here to watch video on x-ray disposal from Adelaide's "Today Tonight" program.

  • X-ray films are processed in our refinery to extract the silver.
  • The x-ray films are heated using temperatures of over 1,000 degrees celsius.
  • The silver is extracted and converted into a more pure silver form.
  • The silver can then be re-used for things such as silver solder, jewellery, silver plating of utensils, electrical components and film manufacture.
  • Siltech will safely and confidentially destroy your reports and records, or if you dispose of them yourself, send just the film.

If you have small quantities of x-rays, simply place them in an envelope and post to:

Siltech Pty Ltd
'X-Ray Recycling'
PO Box 463
Reservoir VIC 3073

or drop them off at any of our locations.  Some community-based organisations are also assisting members of the public with responsible destruction of old or out-dated
x-rays.

Red Cross

In South Australia, Siltech has developed a relationship with the Head Office of Red Cross to collect x-ray films for recycling, so they are not discarded in landfill.

Volunteers at Head Office collect x-rays from a variety of locations, including small medical centres and GP practices as well as private homes.

Additionally, members of the public have been encouraged to drop off x-rays at Red Cross Centres or our office in Camden Park, Adelaide.

The relationship with Red Cross realises two benefits to the community:

  • The reduction of x-ray film to landfill sites, and
  • The revenue earned by Red Cross for the silver value of the x-ray film, which they inject back into the community.

Planet Ark

Planet Ark, the renowned and respected environmental organisation, recognised the environmental benefits of the ethical and secure destruction of x-ray film and they have included us on their 'RecyclingNearYou' website with details of the service we provide, and a list of locations for dropping off your old x-rays.

Wesley Mission

Wesley Mission in Brisbane is taking advantage of our film collection service by placing collection bins in their aged care facilities for residents and their families to deposit unwanted x-ray films.

This secure service provides peace of mind to residents who had generally stored film around their rooms because of privacy concerns and had no idea how to dispose of or recycle x-rays.

Residents gain an additional benefit as the revenue raised is put back into their amenities and facilities.
